Gaucho (gaucho in Spanish)

There are several conflicting hypotheses concerning the origin of the term. It may derive from the Mapuche cauchu ("vagabond") or from the Quechua huachu ("orphan"), which gives also a different word in Spanish "guacho". The first recorded uses of the term date from around the time of Argentine independence in 1816. The gauchos are generally reputed to be strong, honest, silent types,perhaps,more of an air of melancholy. The gaucho stands as one of the best-known cultural symbols of Argentina. The gaucho has been elevated to the level of myth, celebrated in both song and prose, and well endowed with the virtues of strength, bravery and honor.The gaucho could live off of the land with no need for civilization, only his horse, knife and lasso. Not unlike the American cowboy, the gaucho has become idealized and the stuff of myth. No one did so much to create that myth than José Hernandez with his poem Martin Fierro, one of the finest and best-known pieces of Latin American literature. Martín Fierro, the hero of the poem, is drafted into the Argentine military for a border war, deserts, and becomes an outlaw and fugitive. The image of the free gaucho is often contrasted to the slaves who worked the northern Brazilian lands. Further literary descriptions are found in Ricardo Güiraldes' Don Segundo Sombra.
